Pranayama

Our spring term topic this year is Pranayama.

The word pranayama is a combination of prana (energy) and yama, (control, sometimes extends). Pranayama is a practice that involves the management or control of the breath. Yogis believe that this practice not only re-energises the body but actually extends life itself.

Pranayama breathing practices work by clearing both physical and emotional obstacles in our body - this is achieved through clearing the nadis (energy channels in our bodies) allowing prana (life energy) to flow freely, resulting in both body and mind becoming free.

Pranayama can be practiced as a stand-alone practice or incorporated into an asana practice, coordinating your breath with your movements.  It is also possible to introduce pranayama into daily activities, for example during physical exercise or exertion, in stressful situations‚ or to help over come health challenges such as insomnia.

While specific pranayama practices all have unique qualities and effects, there are many general benefits of pranayama;

- Reduces stress

- Reduces anxiety and calms the mind

- Reduces fatigue, boosts energy

- Lowers high blood pressure

- Strengthens the respiratory system

- Improves mental focus and concentration

- Boosts immune system

In January we revisited Diagphramatic breathing as the foundation of Yogic breath. We have practiced both Ujjayi breath and Nadi Shodhana.

During February we will be continuing with the pranayama theme by practicing both Viloma breath (interrupted breath) and Brahmari (humming bee)

Please do come along to the Glow Collective on either a Wednesday or a Friday morning and start to enjoy the many benefits that Yoga can bring 🙏🏻
